Gray Line Tasmania · Brooke Street Pier

kunanyi, then Mona

A Gray Line day from Hobart's Brooke Street Pier: the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington and the Cascade Gardens with a guide, then the ferry up the Derwent and about 3 hours at Mona on your own. Pick it for the one booking that covers the mountain, the boat and the museum ticket.

kunanyi / Mt Wellington and Mona Day Trip

About this experience

The day starts at Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront and runs about 7.5 hours, per the listing, in a standard group of up to 50. First comes the mountain: a guided coach tour of about 105 minutes up kunanyi, past the dolerite columns of the Organ Pipes, then a short guided walk at the summit, with the city and the Derwent spread out below. On the way down you stop for about 15 minutes at the Cascade Gardens in South Hobart, beside the outside of the Cascade Brewery and the Female Factory, the old women's convict prison.

Back at the waterfront you board the Mona ferry for the 30-minute run up the river, and the museum comes into view on its sandstone peninsula before you land. Then you get about 3 hours of free time at Mona, per the itinerary. That fits Mona's own advice of 3 or 4 hours for the galleries. Most of the museum is underground, on three floors cut into the rock, and you find your way with the O instead of wall labels. The ferry brings you back to Brooke Street Pier.

Included, per the listing: the tour guide, the drive up Mt Wellington, entry to Mona, the return Mona ferry ticket and use of the O. Not included: food and drinks, and tips. Bought separately, adult entry is A$45 and the ferry starts from A$32, per Mona's ticket and ferry pages, which is why a bundle like this one is easy to like. A friendly tip: have lunch soon after you arrive at Mona, then give the galleries the rest of your time.

  • The view over Hobart and the Derwent from the kunanyi summit
  • The Organ Pipes on the drive up the mountain
  • The Cascade Gardens, with the Cascade Brewery and the Female Factory alongside
  • The ferry up the Derwent and your first look at Mona from the water
  • About 3 hours at Mona with entry and the O included
  • One meeting point at Brooke Street Pier, start and finish

It was great and filled with some history about various places that we visited on the tour. Reached Mt. Wellington on time. Guide’s way of explaining the history during the journey was really interesting and informative.

Tips before you book

  • Bring a warm layer and comfortable shoes, both on the listing's what-to-bring list. The summit sits at about 1,271 m and is colder than the waterfront.
  • The Wellington Park managers say Pinnacle Road can close in snow, ice or severe weather, and the listing says the itinerary may change with road and weather conditions. On those days the guide works around it.
  • Mona is open Thursday to Monday, 10am to 5pm, and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, per Mona's opening-hours page. Check the dates offered for your trip.
  • Mona is cashless and does not allow BYO food or alcohol, so bring a card for lunch and drinks. The Source, the Moorilla Wine Bar and the Void Bar are all on site.
  • Download the O before the day and charge your phone. Our guide to how long you need at Mona helps you plan the 3 hours.
