Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, is a privately owned museum at 655 Main Road, Berriedale, about 11 km north of Hobart. It sells its own tickets: museum entry, the ferry from Brooke Street Pier, the ticketed artworks and a couple of all-in packages. GetYourGuide has no stand-alone entry ticket. What it does sell are day tours that include Mona entry along with the ferry or a car, plus the mountain or the city.

Every price below is in Australian dollars and comes from Mona's visit, tickets and FAQ pages. Tour prices are GetYourGuide from-prices in US dollars. For the boat in detail, read our Mona ferry guide.

The quick answer

From 22 October 2026, Mona entry costs A$45 for adults, A$39 concession and A$21 for ages 12 to 17. Children under 12 are free, and so are Tasmanians, who still need a ticket. Book ahead: entry is by timed slot, and most advance bookings carry a A$3.50 fee. The ferry is a separate ticket from A$32 return.

How much do Mona tickets cost?

Adult entry is A$45 from 22 October 2026. Concession is A$39, ages 12 to 17 pay A$21, and children under 12 get in free.

Mona's visit page splits prices into two groups: visitors from interstate or overseas, and Tasmanians. Entry covers the general collection, which Mona calls "the farthest reaches of David's lounge room", plus the new library. A few artworks need their own ticket.

All of these are Australian dollars. Want to pace yourself? Mona sells a two-day ticket too; for its price, check Mona's booking system or ask Bookings and Enquiries.

Do you need to book tickets for Mona?

Booking is recommended, and Tasmanians need a ticket too. Entry is by timed slot, and the slots are limited, so on busy days you can miss out at the door.

Mona's FAQ puts it plainly: book ahead "so you don't have to queue (or miss out, as there are limited timed entry slots)". Three things to know:

  • Timed entry: your ticket lets you in within the hour marked on it. Arrive late and Mona's terms say it may refuse entry.
  • The wildcard ticket: no allocated time. You turn up when you like and join the queue. Good if your morning is loose, less good on a summer Saturday.
  • Mobile tickets: nothing to print. Your tickets live in the O, Mona's free app, which also lets you change ferry times.

Mona is open Thursday to Monday, 10am to 5pm, and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Those hours are listed until 30 June 2027. If anything special is on for your date, Mona says it shows up when you book.

Is there a booking fee for Mona tickets?

Yes. A A$3.50 transaction fee applies to most advance bookings, with some exclusions. A cart with only free local tickets is not charged it.

The fee is per booking, so put the whole group and the ferry in one order rather than three. Mona's terms and conditions say a booking fee applies to each order made online, by email or by phone.

Changing your date is possible "subject to availability", per Mona's tickets FAQ: contact Bookings and Enquiries before the day. Refunds are limited, and the terms and conditions set out when one applies. If your plans might move, that is one honest reason to look at a tour: the kunanyi / Mt Wellington and Mona day trip and the city tour with Mona both have free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Do Tasmanians get free entry to Mona?

Yes. Tasmanian residents get in free, adults and children alike, but they still need to book a ticket and show photo ID with a Tasmanian address.

Mona accepts photo ID with a Tasmanian address. If yours does not show one, bring a Tassie utility bill along with photo ID. Locals still book because the free ticket holds a timed arrival slot, and Mona does not charge the booking fee when the cart holds only free local entry.

Free local entry has been part of the deal for a long time. When Mona brought in an entry fee for interstate and overseas visitors in May 2011, entry stayed free for Tasmanians. A visiting friend with a Tasmanian host still pays A$45; the ferry, the ticketed artworks and lunch are paid by everyone.

Are there any discounts for Mona tickets?

The published ones are the A$39 concession, free entry for under 12s and Tasmanians, and Companion Card tickets. Mona lists no discount codes.

  • Concession, A$39: healthcare, pension, senior, student and concession travel cards, per Mona's visit page. ID is requested on entry.
  • Ages 12 to 17, A$21: less than half the adult price.
  • Under 12, free: no proof of age needed for ages 4 to 11.
  • Companion Card: book through Bookings and Enquiries, or show your card at the box office on arrival.

The ferry has no concessions at all, Mona's ferry page says, and children under 4 ride free with a ticket. Gift cards are sold if you are buying for someone else. For the price change itself, our 2026 prices note has what moved on 22 October 2026.

Does a Mona ticket include the ferry?

No. Entry and the ferry are separate tickets. The ferry starts from A$32, and a return costs the same as one way. Even a Posh Pit ferry ticket does not include entry.

For one adult from outside Tasmania, entry plus the cheapest return ferry comes to at least A$77, before the A$3.50 transaction fee. Add A$12 if you want Event Horizon. Mona does not publish its own combined entry and ferry price, apart from the two packages in the next section.

You can skip the boat. Mona is about 20 minutes by road, parking on site is limited, and Metro buses 510, 520, 522 and X20 pass Mona, fare-free until 30 June 2027. Our getting there guide compares the bus, the car and the bike.

What are Mona's own packages?

Mona sells two all-in days: A Beginner's Guide to Mona at A$260 and Mona Like a Rockstar at A$540 per person, both leaving at 10.15am, Thursday to Monday.

  • A Beginner's Guide to Mona, A$260: the standard ferry both ways, museum entry, a seated tasting of five wines from Moorilla and Domaine A, a three-course lunch at The Source with two glasses of wine, a hot drink and a memento to take home. Rates valid until 30 March 2027.
  • Mona Like a Rockstar, A$540: the Posh Pit ferry both ways, a host to meet you, entry, a cocktail at the Void Bar, five courses with matched wine at Faro, Event Horizon, a digestif at The Source and a gift. Adults only. Rates valid through to 31 March 2027.

The second one is also on GetYourGuide, sold by Mona itself, as the Mona Like a Rockstar day: from $374 in US dollars, a newer listing on GetYourGuide, small groups of up to 6 and free cancellation up to 24 hours before, per the listing. Mona's terms say date changes or refunds on its own packages must be made no later than 3 days before the start.

Which Mona tours include entry?

Three listings include Mona entry plus transport: the kunanyi / Mt Wellington day trip and the city tour by Gray Line Tasmania, and Mona's own Rockstar day. A private car tour is a fourth option.

Each one sorts the entry ticket and the getting there in a single booking. Time at Mona and the from-price are from the listings:

TourTime at MonaLengthFrom (USD)
kunanyi / Mt Wellington and Mona Day TripAbout 3 hours in the galleries, after the mountain7.5 hours$98 per person
Hobart City Sightseeing Tour and MonaAbout 3 hours in the afternoon, ferry back to town8 hours$104 per person
Explore Mona Like a RockstarMost of the day: galleries, a 5-course lunch and Event Horizon7 hours$374 per person
Private kunanyi / Mt Wellington & Mona TourAbout 2.5 hours, by private car5 hours$534 per group

The two Gray Line Tasmania tours both start at Brooke Street Pier and give you about three hours in the galleries. The mountain trip has the guide and the summit in the morning; the city tour has Battery Point, Salamanca Place and the Female Factory by coach tram, and gets back to Hobart at 5.30pm, per the listing. The private tour goes by car with a driver guide and gives about 2.5 hours at Mona; its listing names Mona entry in the inclusions but marks the visit "extra fee" in the itinerary, so check whether Mona entry is in your quote.

Tania wrote of the mountain trip in Feb 2026: "The Mona was much more than I expected. It was one of the highlights of the time in Hobart."
