A day on Bruny Island

Bruny Island Day Tour with Lighthouse

About this experience

The bus leaves Hobart at 7am and is back at about 5 to 5.30pm, per the listing, with pickups at more than 20 places, among them Brooke Street Pier and several hotels. An air-conditioned bus and the SeaLink ferry take you across, and a local guide stays with you all day, in a group of up to 20. Morning tea is on the beach at Two Tree Point: freshly shucked Get Shucked oysters, three Bruny Island cheeses, bread, tea and coffee.

Then the island. Adventure Bay and a look for the white wallaby, South Bruny National Park, and the highlight: a guided tour inside Cape Bruny Lighthouse, built by convict labour in 1836, with 72 steps to the balcony and a museum. Lunch is at Hotel Bruny over Sunset Beach, then a private chocolate and fudge tasting at Bruny Island Chocolate Company, honey at Bruny Island Honey and the lookout at The Neck on the way home.

Time at Mona: none, this is a day in the south. Give it its own day. Mona is open Thursday to Monday and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which makes Bruny a natural fit for either; the Mt Wellington and Mona day trip the day after makes a good pair. Drinks with meals are not included (water on the bus is free), and the listing says the tour is not for wheelchair users. Bring a small bag only: no suitcases on the bus.

★★★★★

Our guide, Marina, was the perfect tour host, as she was so knowledgeable about everything on the island, including flora and fauna, and even little things like the bread frig on the side of the road [...] the views from the top of the lighthouse were truly spectacular.

He gave detailed and thoughtful introductions to each scenic spot as well as the local culture. He even took us out to spot wallabies. The whole trip was wonderfully arranged with a perfect itinerary.

The pace of the trip was also great, and you could choose not to climb the lighthouse or the stairs near Neck Beach, depending on your fitness level [...] This excursion, where you can sample delicious oysters, cheese, chocolate, and honey, is highly recommended.
