What is Dark Mofo?

Mona's midwinter arts and culture festival, held in Hobart each June around the longest nights of the year.

Mona puts it plainly: “Our winter festival, Dark Mofo, continues each June.” It began in 2013, launched by David Walsh with creative director Leigh Carmichael and Brian Ritchie. Events spread across the city, not just the museum. The Tasmanian Government's release for 2026 named “the usual favourites, such as the Winter Feast, the Ogoh-Ogoh, Night Mass and the Nude Solstice Swim”.

Like Mona, some of it is confronting by design, and that is part of the draw. Read each event's notes when the program comes out, and pick what suits you.

Before the night events, the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington and about 3 hours at Mona, entry and ferry included.

Did Dark Mofo stop in 2024, and is it back?

The full festival took a one-year break in 2024, with a scaled-down program from 13 to 23 June 2024. It returned in full in 2025, and ran again from 11 to 22 June 2026.

The return went well. The Tasmanian Government says the 2025 festival drew over 50,000 interstate and overseas visitors, about 120,000 unique attendees and more than A$67 million in economic benefit for the state. The 2026 edition followed from 11 to 22 June, and 2027 is set for 9 to 22 June.

When is the Nude Solstice Swim in 2027?

The 2027 date has not been announced. The swim is held at dawn around the winter solstice, and in 2026 it took place on Monday 22 June at Long Beach, Hobart.

AAP reported that the 3,000 tickets for the 2026 swim were quickly snapped up, so watch Dark Mofo's website and be ready when it opens. The swim began with the first festival in 2013, in the River Derwent.

Prefer to watch the river from a warm seat? The historic lunch cruise spends 1.5 hours on the Derwent with lunch on board, from Murray Street Pier.

Is Mona open during Dark Mofo, and how does the ferry run in winter?

Mona's hours page lists Thursday to Monday, 10am to 5pm, until 30 June 2027. Festival days can differ, so check the date when you book: Mona says anything special shows up in the booking.

The festival starts on a Wednesday and ends on a Tuesday, both days the museum is usually closed, so build the Mona day around Thursday to Monday. From 30 March 2027 the ferry runs its off-peak timetable, 7 sailings each way, about 30 minutes up the Derwent from Brooke Street Pier. Fares stay from A$32, return the same as one way.

Winter is a good season for a museum underground. The Bureau of Meteorology gives Hobart a mean top of 12.1°C in June and about 4 hours of sun a day, and none of that reaches B3. Wear a warm coat for the boat. Our Mona ferry guide has the details on tickets and the pier.

Is Mona Foma still on, and what else can you do in a Hobart winter?

No. Mona Foma, Mona's former summer festival, came to an end after 16 years. Dark Mofo is now Mona's one festival, and the rest of a winter trip is Hobart itself.

Snow on kunanyi / Mount Wellington is part of a June visit, and Pinnacle Road can close in snow or ice. A guide helps on those days. Larraine (Oct 2025), on the Mt Wellington and Mona day trip: “Even though SNOW closed the road to the very top of Mt Wellinton Victor did alternative views.” Kath (Jun 2026), on the city tour with Mona: “What a wonderful way to spend a day im Hobart.”

On a day the museum is closed, the Bruny Island day tour brings oysters and cheese for morning tea, lunch at Hotel Bruny and a guided visit inside Cape Bruny Lighthouse. More ideas for the city in our things to do in Hobart guide, and for the museum day in how long to spend at Mona.
