The Mona ferry

Thirty minutes up the Derwent from Brooke Street Pier, a sheep to sit on and a bar on board: the Mona ferry is how most people arrive. Here are the fares, the times and the Posh Pit.

Mona runs its own high-speed catamarans between Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront and the jetty below the museum at Berriedale. The ferry sails Thursday to Monday, the days the museum is open. It is a separate ticket from museum entry, and Mona sells both.

This guide covers the trip, the fares, Standard against the Posh Pit, the current timetable and the new one from 3 December 2026, parking near the pier, access for wheelchairs and prams, and what ferry plus entry costs. For the bus, the car and the bike, see our getting there guide.

The quick answer

The Mona ferry leaves Brooke Street Pier and takes about 30 minutes each way. Fares start from A$32, a return costs the same as one way, and children under 4 ride free with a ticket. There are no concessions, and the ferry does not include museum entry. A new timetable with more sailings starts on 3 December 2026.

Is there a ferry to Mona from Hobart?

Yes. Mona's own ferry runs from Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront to the museum's jetty at Berriedale, Thursday to Monday.

Brooke Street Pier is at 12 Franklin Wharf, in Sullivans Cove. Mona recommends the ferry over driving: its FAQ answers "Do I need to catch the ferry?" with "Yes", because parking at the museum is limited.

Your tickets sit in the O, Mona's free app, as mobile tickets. Running late or early? Tap "change times" on the ferry ticket. Changes depend on space on board and cannot be made too close to departure; staff at Brooke Street Pier or the Mona box office can also help.

How long is the boat ride to Mona?

About 30 minutes each way, per Mona's ferry page. One block on Mona's visit page says about 25 minutes; plan on 30.

The boat heads upriver from the city, and Mona's ferry page promises "ravishing river/mountain views". The approach by water is part of Walsh's design for the place, Mona says.

Line the boat up with your timed entry. Mona suggests 3 to 4 hours inside, and the museum closes at 5pm, so on the current timetable a boat by 1.15pm leaves you a full visit. Our how long at Mona guide helps you plan the day.

How much does the Mona ferry cost?

From A$32, and a return costs the same as one way. There are no concessions; children under 4 travel free but need a ticket.

Mona publishes the fare only as "From $32" (Australian dollars), and it does not list a separate Posh Pit fare on its ferry page, so check the price for your date and seat type when you book. Most advance bookings add a A$3.50 transaction fee, per Mona's FAQ.

Two rules catch people out. The ferry ticket never includes museum entry, even in the Posh Pit. And because the return is the same price as one way, there is no saving in going by boat only one way and coming back by bus.

Is the Posh Pit on the Mona ferry worth it?

If you want a quiet seat, drinks and small food included, yes. Standard is fine for most: seats shaped like sheep and tigers, bars on board and the same views.

Mona's own descriptions:

  • Standard: "Sheep/tigers to sit on, bars to drink at, ravishing river/mountain views to admire". Mona is cashless, on board too.
  • Posh Pit: the ferry's private lounge, bar and deck, with complimentary drinks and "tiny food". It cannot cater for coeliac or severe allergies; gluten-free, vegetarian and other requests need 24 hours' notice to Bookings and Enquiries.

The Posh Pit is built into the Mona Like a Rockstar day, sold by Mona on GetYourGuide from $374: the 10.15am Posh Pit ferry, a cocktail at the Void Bar, five courses at Faro with matched wine and Event Horizon. Adults only.

In summer that means a boat roughly every half hour in the morning. The museum hours stay 10am to 5pm, Thursday to Monday, so a late boat back is not a late museum. Check the times for your date when you book. Our summer 2026-27 note covers the peak season in more detail.

Is the Mona ferry worth it?

Yes, for most visitors. Parking at Mona is limited, the trip is part of the design, and the return costs the same as one way. Go by road only if you are driving on elsewhere.

Here is how it compares. By road Mona is about 20 minutes away, and there is not much parking on site. Metro buses 510, 520, 522 and X20 pass Mona and are fare-free until 30 June 2027, which is the cheapest way. Keen cyclists can ride the Intercity Cycleway and continue to Mona. The ferry is the only one where the trip is part of the visit.

Sarah summed it up after the city tour in Mar 2025: "comfy transport, great guide, and fabulous ferry ride and trip to MONA. All round great day". And Jenny, in Feb 2026: "The ferry was comfortable, and the food was nice along with a cold beer at the end of the day."

Is the Mona ferry accessible?

The lower deck is accessible for mobility aids and prams, with a bar and an accessible toilet. There are 99 steps up from the jetty, but an accessible tunnel entrance is there if you need it.

Mona's ferry page: "There are 99 steps upon arrival at Mona." Tell the staff on board if you need the tunnel. Mona adds, with its usual tone, that David says you have to take the stairs if you are able, in Standard and Posh Pit alike.

Driving to the pier? Mona suggests the multi-storey car parks in Argyle Street, Centrepoint or Market Place, or the Dunn Place car park. Argyle Street and Market Place are about a 10 to 15 minute walk away. Accessible parking is along Franklin Wharf, Salamanca Place and Castray Esplanade, and there is a drop-off area in front of Brooke Street Pier. Staying nearby? Mona suggests leaving the car and taking a taxi to the terminal.

Inside the museum, three lifts run between the floors, and Mona has some wheelchairs to borrow, which cannot be reserved in advance.

How much do Mona tickets and the Hobart ferry cost together?

For an adult from outside Tasmania, at least A$77: A$45 entry plus a return ferry from A$32, before the A$3.50 transaction fee. Tours that include both start from $98 in US dollars.

Mona has no published entry and ferry combo apart from its two packages, A Beginner's Guide to Mona (A$260) and Mona Like a Rockstar (A$540). Our tickets guide has every price. The tours with the ferry and entry included, from the listings:

On both Gray Line Tasmania tours, the guide handles the timing and you meet at Brooke Street Pier. The mountain trip includes the return ferry; the city tour drives you around Hobart first and puts you on the ferry back, in town at 5.30pm, per the listing. Kath wrote of the city tour in Jun 2026: "What a wonderful way to spend a day im Hobart. [...] before it was time to catch the ferry to MONA - which was incredible."
